Hydrant Audits

Fire Hydrant audits

HydraTec Services offers auditing services to our customers to insure that the fire hydrants in the city are working properly when they are needed. Maintaining and checking your fire hydrants on a regular basis is essential. It is recommended that the hydrants in your system be checked and operated on a yearly basis, and keep records on the hydrants for five years to receive credit from ISO.

How many times have we heard the horror stories about fire hydrants not working for the fire department during an emergency? Lives and property were placed in jeopardy needlessly. By checking the fire hydrants regularly and keeping records this problem can be eliminated. It is a terrible mistake to assume that a fire hydrant will automatically work for the purpose in which it was installed without any maintenance. It is the city’s responsibility to oversee the condition of their fire hydrants for the sake of its citizens.

There are a number of things that should be checked:

  1. Does the hydrant have water flowing to it and is it available in case of an emergency?
  2. Are the parts of the hydrant in good condition to insure that the hydrant operates properly?
  3. Do all of the hydrant caps easily come off, and do all the nozzles have the proper thread pattern to insure that the fire department will not have a problem attaching their hose to it?
  4. Check the pressure of the water system at the hydrant.
  5. Check the flow of the hydrants in gallons per minute.
  6. Check the residual pressure.  (By using the system pressure, flow in gpm, and residual pressure of a hydrant we can calculate its residual flow at 20 psi.)
  7. Check to see if the hydrant is leaking.
  8. We also identify the hydrant, giving you the exact location by both address and GPS.
  9. While we’re on the job if any additional hydrants are needed in certain areas we make recommendations accordingly.

Record keeping is the most important part of this job because you will be able to demonstrate that you have a program established to maintain a very valuable asset of your city. Establishing a regular maintenance program demonstrates to your citizens that you care about their welfare and you may be able to lower the fire insurance rating for the City.

Allow us to help you with the auditing and maintenance program for your Fire Hydrants because this is what we specialize in. After the Audit you will have an accurate count of the fire hydrants for your water system so that they may be placed in the inventory of the city. We will take care of the fire hydrants, while you take care of the day to day responsibilities for the city. By working together you can use the resources available to you to help the citizens. Please give us the opportunity to discuss this service with you and show you how we can save you money.
